Foot Health Week Starts Monday
Foot Health Week for 2022 commences Monday 10th October. This is an annual event in Australia where Podiatrists and the Podiatry Association come together to promote foot care. Throughout the week we’ll see various media channels discuss foot health but the overall take home message will be… we only get one pair of feet so it’s important to look after them.
Know The Facts About Your Feet
It’s important to understand the facts about your feet so you can make informed decisions about them. Here are some things worth knowing:
- Most people will walk well over 120,000km in their lifetime so the feet are an important mode of transport.
- You have 28 bones in each foot (26 ones plus 2 sesamoids). Over 25% of the total number of bones in the body exist in the feet. It’s important they all function properly to maintain pain free movement.
- Each toe has three phalanges (bones) with the exception being the big toe which contains two.
- Flat feet are quite normal in infants. It’s only as we get older that the foot arch develops. Most of the development occurs in the first 7 to 8 years.
- Footwear should be measured and fitted correctly to ensure normal development isn’t hampered.
Foot pain, heel pain and aching legs can have hundreds of different causes. It’s important to consult an experienced foot health professional if you experience pain in the feet or legs. Podiatrists are foot experts. Just as the Dentist specialises in oral health, Podiatrists specialise in the health of feet and legs.
